Kaelion The Mercenary

Born into exile and sharpened by constant war, Kaelion “The Mercenary” is one of the most feared mercenary commanders of his age. Son of Helios and grandson of Solon “The Wise”. As de facto leader of the Lost Falcons, he sold his blade across the eastern world, until his arrival in Zemora in 217 AAC triggered a chain of events that would destabilize the city beyond repair.

Biography

Kaelion was born in 184 AAC in the city of Nemis, as the firstborn son of Helios “The Lost”. His grandfather, Solon “The Wise”, had ruled Nemis for decades, his authority resting not on force but on age, reputation, and political inertia.

During the Nemisian Civil War, Kaelions’ father emerged as one of the hardline leaders resisting Erosian dominance. During these warring years Kaelion stayed in Nemis due to his young age. When the war was lost and most of Solon’s sons had fallen in battle it became clear that the Nemisian League would lose against the Realm of Eros. Eventually Nemis capitulated, Lord Solon and his younger brother Hymnon surrendered the city to Herculon III, vowing for peace. Refusing to accept defeat or submission, Helios fled Nemis with a band of loyal soldiers, taking his young son Kaelion with him into exile.

Kaelion’s formative years were spent on campaign. He received no classical education, no priestly guidance, and no courtly upbringing. Instead, he was trained in weapons, discipline, and command from early adolescence. Throughout the late 190s and early 200s AAC, the Lost Falcons established themselves as one of the most reliable and brutal sell-sword companies operating in the east. Though originally Nemisian in composition, they gradually evolved into a hardened, professional force loyal only to their commanders.

Their primary employers were cities and satraps within the Empire of Jagrad, though the Falcons ranged widely. Campaign records place them as far south as the Uum Peninsula, and even beyond the trade city of Jerit. Their reputation was built not on honor or restraint, but on results: swift suppression, targeted killings, and absolute obedience to contract terms.

During this period, Kaelion emerged as a field commander. He displayed a disturbingly methodical relationship with violence. Contemporary accounts describe him as calm during executions, detached during massacres, and incapable of hesitation once a target was marked.

Around 214 AAC, Helios began spending extended periods at the royal court of Jagrad, acting as an advisor and political figure rather than a field commander. Command of the Lost Falcons passed in practice to Kaelion during this period and by 217 AAC, Kaelion was universally recognized as the true leader of the Lost Falcons.

In early 217 AAC, Kaelion accepted a contract in the city of Zemora from its political leader Tiberion Axelos, a port city in the region of Askaria, on the western shores of the Jagradian lands, but with a clear Erosian heritage.
