The Alcdaer
The Alcdaer are the revered priestesses of the Brear, anointed judges and ritualists who travel the Hides of Breasia performing sacred rites and standing as neutral arbiters in the disputes of the tribes. They appear in the earliest tales of the Brear, where they are consistently drawn as figures of real social weight: not mere hedge-priestesses, but the closest thing the Brear had to a rule of law before the Erosians ever crossed the Gap of Mook.
An Alcdaer owes no fixed loyalty to any single Hide. She is trained by an elder of the order, anointed yearly at the winter solstice by the Eldest Coven, and expected to travel constantly, tending the ill, blessing the dead, and above all handing down verdicts no chieftain is supposed to be able to buy or threaten. In practice, most keep some tie to the stead where they were raised, but the order’s authority has always rested on the fiction, and often the fact, that an Alcdaer answers to no lord.
Before the Erosian conquest, this authority was mostly spoken rather than written. The Brear had no script of their own, so the rites, judgments, and case-law of the Alcdaer passed down by voice alone, generation to generation. It made the order flexible and deeply trusted. When the golden legions finally came, though, it also made them militarily useless. Whatever powers the Alcdaer carried were no match for a professional army, and the order’s real contribution to the resistance was knowledge of the land, not magic.
Not every Alcdaer confines herself to healing and arbitration. A hardline faction within the order has always been willing to go further: rites drawing on human blood, and, in the worst tellings, human sacrifice outright. These hardliners tend to cluster in the harsher, more isolated Hides of the north, where the old ways never softened. The Red Brothers of Uctenen, said to raise their children in tubs filled with blood, are the most infamous example of how far this current can run when it’s married to a warband instead of a temple.
Breasia fell to the Realm of Eros in stages: the Siege of Tracabra in 186 opened the conquest, and by 191 the armies of Herculon III and Xenetor “The Cold” had broken the last organized resistance. The Erosians’ priority afterward was never cultural conquest, it was quiet. Raids out of the Breasian Plateau were the real danger, and the fastest way to stop them was to leave Brear custom largely intact rather than provoke another decade of guerrilla war in ground the legions didn’t know. The Alcdaer were allowed to keep functioning much as before.
That peace held for roughly nine years, long enough for Zolkar to rise as the richest city in the north and for Nekimber to grow from a homestead into a proper town with its own gathering ring. But it was never universal. Graecu “The Hag”, one of the order’s own, refused to accept the golden intruders from Helissia as anything but a passing plague. She began spreading prophecy of the red demon, the last demon, the one destined to devour the earth, and started building a following against Erosian rule from inside the very order meant to stay neutral.
Graecu’s defiance outlived the First Rebellion. She’s recorded generations later still active, and still dangerous: she is one of the named leaders, alongside Belisar and Ucregur, behind the Second Rebellion of the Brear, a war larger than the first.
